London: a workshop at the women’s library

The collective has been hiding in the last year due to other realities that needed to be prioritised. But it’s time to come back to the front line to make a move for creative and thought-provoking projects.

I was in London this past weekend to attent the workshop called "the politics of appereance" at the women’s library which is part of the metropolitan university. i have been to the library before and i totally reccomend to everybody to go down and spend few days looking through the amazing collection of book, journals and magazines that they have. I am wondering how long it took them to collect all those goods. they are many and they are rare. yes. rare. some of the books you can easily find them in normal university’s library but others not. that’s why it’s worthy going there and  have the chance to feed the mind with interesting texts.i was reading few books about women’s magazine, one of them was a Ph.D disseration written in 1970 about women’s magazines from 1630 till 1938. cool eh?and then i was reading a book about brests which was also cool. So, the library is cool, the space is nice..they organise and host different free exhibition in the spacein the groundfloor.

But, going back to the workshop that i went to. it was totally s**t. two women were the main speakers of the workshop presenting their book related to feminism and fashion. one of the woman, a free lance journalist and lecturer of journalism at Goldsmith University (oh my goooddd!!) was totally out of context. she was just giving out her opinion on feminism and fashion without any regards or any knowledge in feminism theories. more over she was really offensiv with her statements which were for instance: ‘ i feel odd if male wear make up"; "wearing a short skirt send a specific message to society, you can’t deny it!"; "women’s magazines are not a problem or a threat for young women" and so on. Luckly some women who were attending the conference kicked her ass a questioned her about those statements in a challenging way. but still it is impressive how shrecognise her self as a feminist when she is just a confident woman playing with her thoughts on the subject and not critically analysing the field of feminism.

it is in myinterest to see what is happening in the academic world of feminist scholars and what is the message they deliver towards the audience. i couldnt personally recognise her as a feminist because of her arrogance and lack of feminist theories. But i believe that it is good to know your ‘enemy’ so then to challenge its core.
